Practicing Temperance

Your name echoes in the back of my mind
but whenever I start to text you
I remember how I said I’d give you time

Time to figure out who you are
Time to let the wounds she left close up and scar

But while you take your time to heal
I can’t help but wonder
Is it worth remembering how you feel

Wrapped up in your arms in the middle of the night
You’d hold me so close; it was almost too tight
Waking up only to kiss my shoulder
and in my dreams I see us getting older

But something happened after the last time you left
You went home and your mind became a mess
You’re closing a chapter you never thought would end
While pausing the start of a new story recommended by a friend

When you finally come to the realization that I’ve known since the moment we met
I’m terrified that I won’t care for the occasion like I’ve built up in my head

I can’t wait around for you to contact me
So I’m living my life to the best of my ability
But I wish you didn’t feel the need to hide
Because it sure would be nice to have you by my side

This is what it feels like to have someone choose you
So let me know when you’re ready to choose me too
